Architectural Design as a Means of Questioning the Topography of One’s Thinking
Architecture is a physical expression of our built environment and goes far beyond the mere fulfillment of spatial needs. Architectural design is an intellectual investigation into the meaning of a specific form in its cultural context. This research begins with the architect: their personal universe of memories, experiences, and interests form the basis of a landscape, city, or house design. This universe does not comprise individual fragments, but appears as a cultural network spanning a wide variety of contents: it is a vast topography of thought.
In the sequence of images shown, the inquisitive viewer is taken on a multifaceted journey through a world of things surrounding the design, whose associations allow for the experience to be expanded. The sounds that Fritz Hauser composed to accompany this design iconography embed the images in an associative sound space, which provides the viewer’s trajectory with an additional dimension.
This installation was conceived as Miller & Maranta’s contribution to the 2018 Venice Biennale—a collaboration with Fritz Hauser titled Freespace: Practice of Teaching.
