The Art of Failure

Exhibition

Santiago Sierra

Santiago Sierra (born in 1966 in Madrid, living in Mexico) is generally known as an artist who loves extremes and relentlessly pushes the limits of what is morally tolerable.

His video installation entitled “The Punished” refers to an action he carried out in March 2006 at various locations in Germany: 18 German citizens born prior to 1939 were to stand in front of a wall four times a day for half an hour, facing it in shame. Whether the purpose was punishment or coming to terms with a difficult past—this project was doomed to failure from the start. The action was carried out at the following public locations in Frankfurt: courthouse, indoor market, subway police station, public transit access to main train station, German library, municipal library, Senckenberg Museum, J.W.- Goethe University, Fine Arte Fair, Messe Frankfurt.
