The Art of Failure

Exhibition

Max Philipp Schmid/Stella Händler

The video installation “Sad Song” (1998) by Max Philipp Schmid/Stella Händler (born in 1962 in Basel/Dornach, living in Basel) is centered on melancholy and its elevation, existential exhaustion—notions inextricably linked with failure.

Content and technology interact in an intriguing fashion. The protagonists, breathing “I’m so tired”, are exposed to the seemingly inexorable trudging and twitching of the machines, and this reinforces a sense of growing fatigue. It’s as if the feeling of exhaustion is taking hold more and more—not just of the people shown but gradually also of the machine, the room, and eventually the entire space.
